Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today underscored the transformative nature of the India-UK relationship, celebrating the recent conclusion of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and announcing significant advancements across technology, defence, and education sectors. Speaking at a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Mumbai, PM Modi affirmed that the partnership, built on shared democratic values, is a "pillar of global stability and economic progress."
Welcoming Prime Minister Starmer on his inaugural visit, PM Modi highlighted the speed and depth of recent engagements, noting that PM Starmer’s visit with the "largest-ever business delegation" just months after CETA's conclusion reflects a "new energy and broad vision" driving the bilateral ties.
CETA: A Game-Changer for Economic Prosperity
The Prime Minister emphasized the landmark Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), concluded during his visit to the UK in July, as a cornerstone of future prosperity. "This agreement will reduce import costs between the two countries, create new employment opportunities for youth, boost trade, and benefit both our industries and consumers," PM Modi stated, painting a clear picture of the mutual economic benefits.
The high-level engagement continued with both leaders addressing the India-UK CEO Forum and the Global FinTech Festival, aiming to garner "valuable insights" and unlock "new avenues" for cooperation.
Strategic Alignment: Indo-Pacific, West Asia & Ukraine
Beyond economics, the leaders engaged in crucial discussions on regional and global security. PM Modi reiterated India's consistent stance on international conflicts: "On the issues of the Ukraine conflict and Gaza, India supports all efforts to restore peace through dialogue and diplomacy." He also stressed India's "full commitment to enhancing maritime security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region," signaling a shared strategic outlook with the UK.
Innovation and Talent: Driving Technology & Education
A significant portion of PM Modi's address focused on the burgeoning technology and innovation partnership:
- India-UK Technology Security Initiative: A "strong platform for joint research and innovation in critical and emerging technologies" has been established.
- Innovation Bridge: Initiatives like the 'Connectivity and Innovation Centre' and the 'Joint AI Research Centre' aim to link the youth and foster collaboration in AI.
- Critical Minerals: A new Industry Guild and Supply Chain Observatory, with a satellite campus at ISM Dhanbad, will enhance cooperation in critical minerals.
- Climate Technology: The formation of the India-UK Offshore Wind Taskforce and the Climate Technology Startup Fund will support innovators tackling climate challenges.
In education, PM Modi expressed delight at the increasing presence of UK universities in India, citing the recent inauguration of Southampton University's Gurugram campus and the ongoing construction of three more UK university campuses in GIFT City. This trend signifies a deeper academic exchange and talent development.
Deepening Defence Cooperation
Defence ties are also scaling new heights. PM Modi announced progress towards defence co-production and greater integration of the defence industries. A new agreement for cooperation in military training will see Indian Air Force Flying Instructors serve as trainers with the UK’s Royal Air Force, showcasing a significant step in trust and interoperability. The ongoing joint naval exercise "Konkan 2025" was highlighted as a timely testament to this deepening collaboration.
The Living Bridge: People-to-People Ties
Concluding his statement, PM Modi acknowledged the immense contribution of the 1.8 million Indians residing in the UK, terming them a "living bridge" that strengthens friendship, cooperation, and progress between the two nations.
Prime Minister Modi's address painted a picture of a dynamic, multi-faceted partnership, driven by shared values and a clear vision for mutual prosperity and global stability. The visit of Prime Minister Starmer is set to propel this strategic alliance to new dimensions, leveraging India's dynamism and the UK's expertise for a brighter future.
