The Hindu editorial on 13/09/2025 criticizes the Trump administration’s contradictory and inconsistent policy towards India. Weeks after calling off the trade talks, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal was invited to Washington. There were also signals of improvement in the bilateral ties from President Trump and Prime Minister Modi. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Mr. Trump’s Ambassador-designate to India Sergio Gor also said they expect ties to be smooth, a trade deal to be announced shortly, and a Quad Summit later this year. Despite the US punitive tariff, pressure on India's foreign policy to stop oil imports from Russia, visas, deportations, and Trump's remarks on Operation Sindhoor and Pakistan, India prepared well to move forward with the US. However, the doublespeak of the US, which simultaneously seeks a strategic partnership while implementing punitive actions, creates confusion, erodes trust, and places India in a difficult diplomatic position. Hence the editorial concludes that the unpredictable demands of the Trump administration make the US an unreliable partner, compelling India to carefully navigate the relationship to safeguard its own economic interests and international reputation.
